A BIT ABOUT ME

Who I Am
I have been playing music since I was very young, starting with piano lessons from my mom at the age of four. Around age 8, I started voice lessons and self-taught myself flute before beginning private lessons for this instrument a few years later.

After keeping up with music lessons throughout my grade school years, I entered the Desautels Faculty of Music, studying voice as my primary instrument and studying flute on the side.

I completed a 4-year Bachelor's of Music degree at the University of Manitoba in 2020 with a focus in Voice Performance.

Throughout the many years of learning and studying music, I found a passion for performing and teaching music.

Teaching: Philosophies and Methods

I started teaching private voice and flute lessons from my home studio in 2018. I have worked with students as young as 6 years old to students in their 30s and 40s, with various levels of experience.

As a teacher, I firmly believe that I must be open to learning and growth myself. I have completed trainings in the Alexander Technique, applying tools I've learned to my teaching methods. I am continuously learning how to improve my teaching by learning more about the body and its interconnectedness, and reading pedagogy books and articles.

I believe that everyone can learn how to sing. The key is knowing how to sing. There are several methods of teaching used, and mine is only one of them. However, I like to teach with the focus on the student. I promote full-body singing because with this focus, the voice is not an isolated, over-worked muscle in your body, but rather the full body is engaged in the music as one big instrument, thereby encouraging healthier singing and living habits in general. By using methods from the Alexander Technique (learned through the Mind Body Music Academy) and pedagogical information, I help the student explore the full potential of their unique instrument. The methods used in teaching voice are also applied to flute so that the student can utilize their whole body.

Through my teaching method for both voice and flute, by engaging with the breath and connecting with the full body, students will learn what it is like to create music with freedom.
